Perhaps for the better, I had not yet got into the Archives (the Security Room, as it is called, seeing as it is accessible only via swipe card). Today I learned the plan is not to start with the boxes, but the folders in the filing cabinets. I was able to start this afternoon. They currently catalog by entering everything into an Excel spreadsheet, this information, in turn, is filtered into their GIS software. I keep eyeing the spreadsheet, and how it lends itself to Dublin Core, which is something I may play with at a later time. Priority now is to first get everything into the spreadsheet.
The company is a much friendly atmosphere than I have worked in previously. In both my previous positions, I never got the sense that people hung out outside of work. Here, there's a group that goes to Trivia on Thursdays. Which I am going to tonight. People are always ready with a smile, have made a point to introduce themselves, and helped with any questions. One thing C. and I have discussed in moving to a new city is we need to be more outgoing. We need to put ourselves out there and get to know people. Hopefully, this is a just first step.
(My apartment complex is hosting a get-together for the Steelers game on Sunday. I barely tolerate football and have no plans to start rooting for the Steelers, but I am still planning to go to meet people in the apartments.)
In other news. Movers successfully picked our stuff up today in Boston. Which means C. is now in a position similar to me, in which he has a bed and a computer, and very little else in the apartment. Our stuff will arrive in the new place just after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
We're almost there.
