I've mentioned here that part of my current job is to track-down various articles. These may be journal articles or theses or other reports. Usually, if I cannot track down the article via our journal and/or database subscriptions, I can turn to our document-delivery service, and they'll be able to send the article to us. For a fee, of course. Today, finally, I stumbled across the article which did not want to be found.
On any given day, I may be searching articles for more than one of the Geologists. I've been helping one of the geologists with a very specific project he's been working on. So when he sent me the article requests today, I figured it would be no issue to find them, and the first, I found easily. The second... well, I checked all our journal and database subscriptions. I checked WorldCat. Nothing. I emailed our document delivery service. Nothing.
I am fairly well convinced this article does not exist online. So short of emailing the author directly, it is unlikely we can get it. Today: Article 1, Stefanie 0. Perhaps having that one article was bound to happen eventually.
Speaking of eventualities, this week also marks two months at the job. Boss seems pleased with my progress. I was quite clear upon being even considered I knew absolutely nothing in regards to geology and the oil/gas industry. I've learned some in the last two months, and I am continually learning something new every day. I am starting to recognize the different types of maps more, and I can better read and understand many of the documents I inventory daily. The glossary I keep at my desk certainly helps.
Here's to the next two months.
