Old Books, SLA, the number 7, and other updates

Thursday of this week, my Supervisor got a package. I know this as often times, whenever anything remotely book related arrives via FedEX or USPS, I am the one who is told with the idea it will Inter Library Loan-related. In this case, it was not, instead being a two volume set he had bought online. Upon realizing what it was, he called me in, with the exclamation, "You'll like this." Two books originally printed in the early-1800s, although since rebound, still with that leather and old paper scent. The books were gorgeous.

Also Thursday, I attended my first SLA Pittsburgh event. SLA, standing for Special Libraries Association, is the professional organization I am most active with. I am a former President of the New England Chapter, and moving down to Pittsburgh, I knew I wanted to get involved with the local chapter. The social was at a Mexican restaurant in the Shadyside neighborhood. It was notable as it marked the first time I took the bus downtown. There's one bus line near both my apartment/work which goes straight into downtown, and though it takes roughly an hour, it is super easy. Next time, however, I am getting a pass - Pittsburgh's equivalent to Boston's Charlie Card. I had one transfer, and maybe 5 minutes walking total, a trip which all in all, took about hour and twenty minutes. Here's to more solo adventures downtown!

The Mexican restaurant was good too. I got briefly excited as the restaurant had the same name as a restaurant I had been to in Boston, which also served Mexican food, and also had pool tables. Alas, this was strictly a restaurant, with decent food. I also got to meet the President-Elect of the Pittsburgh chapter as well as a few other members, and am infinitely more excited to get involved with the chapter. Moving to a new city, especially a city I had never even previously visited, has helped to show me why I am and remain a member of SLA. Because of the people.

Last night, C. and I found ourselves at our monthly Friday night services. In lieu of actual services, the Spiritual Leader instead gave a talk on the number '7', and how it is a powerful number within Judaism. It was quite interesting! I am definitely liking this shul. It's Reform, and has many inter-faith couples - something I was definitely looking for in my search to find a spiritual home here!

He's finally found a job, of which we are very excited. We are looking at it as temporary - it's customer sales/retail - with the hopes he can get into a library or university sometime in the next six months. But it is work, and takes some of the stress off me as being a sole income-earner, and it is glorious.

) Currently hanging out at my local library. Knitting group this morning, and now I have quite a bit of writing to do. One of my goals for 2017 was to get back into writing - the novel, poetry, freelance - and I have a few things to work on this weekend.

Happy weekending!
